BACKPACK PROGRAMSeeking to fill the void of school meal programs, Feeding South Florida partners with select agencies to hand out backpacks full of food to children on Friday afternoons. This food nourishes the children on the weekend when other food might not be available. Many times, low-income children don’t eat between leaving school on Friday and the school breakfast on Monday morning. Feeding South Florida currently distributes to ten backpack sites, feeding over 1,200 children each week. The member agencies operating these programs fill the backpacks every week. Each backpack contains enough food to last the weekend, typically including enough food to help siblings eat as well. Each location is opened with the help of a generous funder which commits to a year of operation. For information about the Backpack Program, please contact Alex Rendon, backpack program manager, at 954-518-1830 or arendon@feedingsouthflorida.org.
