Mobile Food Pantry

Feeding South Florida is taking its fight against hunger to the streets – literally – with the roll out of a mobile pantry truck. The refrigerated vehicle is part of a nationwide fleet of trucks from Kraft Foods and its Foundation, in partnership with Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger-relief organization.

The “farmers’ market on wheels” will hit the road, making up to seven stops per week in South Florida to deliver fresh fruits, vegetables and other nutritious staples.  Nearly one million pounds of food – more than 780,000 meals – will reach the area’s hungry residents each year, at a time when the need has never been greater.

For many families facing financial troubles and struggling to put dinner on the table, help is hard to find.  In this country, we’re hearing more each day about the growing problem of “food deserts” – rural and urban communities where residents might not have access to a grocery store, emergency food assistance, or food of good nutritional balance.  The Kraft Foods Mobile Pantry Program serves as an oasis of fresh food in these underserved areas.

“We’re seeing an unprecedented number of people needing emergency food assistance.  Right here in South Florida our agencies are reporting a 39 percent increase in the demand for assistance,” said Anthea Pennant, director of external affairs of Feeding South Florida.   “The Kraft Foods Mobile Pantry could not come at a better time to help us increase the number of clients we are able to reach, some who live as far as 35 miles from the food bank.”
