Public Policy News

Our network has a critical opportunity to weigh-in with their Members of Congress in response to the recent House Appropriations vote that made significant cuts to TEFAP, CSFP, and WIC and the risk of significant cuts to nutrition in the budget deficit agreement being negotiated right now. While we still have time to influence Congress and show strong grassroots opposition to deep cuts to nutrition assistance programs, our window of opportunity is quickly closing.

What you can do to Help Protect Nutrition Programs

Contact your Member of Congress. This time represents a critical opportunity to have direct interaction with your Members of Congress, which research shows has the most impact on lawmakers. You can invite them to your food bank, set up an in-district meeting, or call their office and find out if they will be hosting a town hall or attending an event in your service area. Express your concern about proposed cuts to nutrition included in the budget resolution and the Agriculture Appropriations bill passed by the House and urge them to protect nutrition assistance programs in the Senate. See our talking points for more details. This is the most important action you can take right now!

Circulate a local sign on letter! If you have recently met with your members of Congress and are looking for other ways to influence the process, circulate a local sign on letter for delivery or submit one of our op-ed templates in your local media. Organize the food banks, agencies, and partners in your state to sign on to the letter as well. This will help us demonstrate broad constituent support for these programs. Submitting an op-ed will raise awareness about the importance of these programs to both the member of Congress and other constituents.
