Miami Country Day School Holds Event for FSF

PR contact:

Abra Carne, Director of Communications

Miami Country Day School

601 NE 107 Street | Miami, FL 33161 | 305.779.7210

Students from Miami Country Day School will gather at noon on Friday April 20, 2012and attempt to set the Guinness Book of World RecordsTM for “The Most Cookies Baked In One Hour Using Solar Ovens”. In honor of Earth Day and Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Abess, Miami Country Day students are attempting this record to bring awareness to the benefits of solar cooking and the great impact it can have on others less fortunate. Students will be divided into teams and be responsible for the baking in their own solar oven. The public is welcome to attend. In the event of rain or heavy clouds, the event will be rescheduled. Any event updates will be posted on the website.

The students goal is to raise $10,000 which will cover the cost of the solar ovens and baking supplies and allow them to send 40 ovens used at this event to needy families in Haiti. The cookies baked at the event will be donated to Feeding South Florida. Donations and sponsorships are being sought and can be made through their websitewww.powerfromthesun.us or by mail: MCDS c/o Guinness Project Miami Country Day School - attention: Jennifer Sennett 601 NE 107 Street, Miami, FL 33161 or in person at the school in the upper, middle or gym offices.

The event is being led by Matthew Cohen, a 16 year old Miami Country Day sophomore who has been actively involved in bringing attention to the solar oven movement for the past 8 years. After seeing how the devastating 2010 earthquake left the people of Haiti suffering without electricity and unable to keep their drinking water safe, Cohen sprung into action launching a websitewww.powerfromthesun.us to educate people worldwide about the benefits of solar cooking and to help raise funds for Sun Ovens International to send solar ovens to Haiti. His passion for making a difference and helping the lives of those less fortunate, has now inspired Cohen to organize this world record attempt.

Judging the world record attempt, are Micah Edelstein, Top Chef season 3 contestant and owner of Miami’s Nemesis Bistro; John Richards, Director of Miami Culinary Institute International Hospitality Center, Barney Weinkle, President of Krons Chocolatier and Larry Berrin, owner of Hot Cookies.

About Solar Cooking

United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that more than 2.4 billion people lack adequate cooking fuels. For developing nations that are sun rich and fuel poor, Solar Ovens can use free sunshine to cook food and pasteurize drinking water. Countries like Haiti and Nepal have less than 2% of their original forests remaining. Cooking fires pollute the atmosphere and contribute to global warming and the greenhouse effect. Many people primarily women and children suffer from violent attacks while gathering wood or lung disease from cooking in the cooking huts. Solar ovens can help make a difference.

Feeding South Florida Brings Back Tasting Event, Raises over $200,000

By Ashley Marco, Biz Bash

After taking a five-year break from hosting its "Come Together" event, Feeding South Florida came back strong, drawing nearly 450 people to celebrate the organization’s 30th anniversary with food from some of South Florida’s top chefs. The hunger relief nonprofit organization, formerly known as Daily Bread Food Bank, held the tasting event at the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse. The large warehouse even rearranged some of its art installations to accommodate this year’s attendance goal of 500 people.

“To be able to have a party in a warehouse that is so fabulous and for a good cause just promises a spectacular evening for anyone who wants to participate in this event,” said Anthea Pennant, director of external affairs for Feeding South Florida.

Simple white tablecloths and small black lamp shades, provided by Panache Party Rentals, dressed scattered, high-top tables in the main showroom. Concrete floors and white walls played in natural contrast to the artistic displays of paint, photography, neon lights, video installations, and sculptures in the space. The room's main focal point, a large installation of hanging ivory Lycra bags filled with various spices, titled “E o Bicho,” was created by Ernesto Neto. In accordance with the theme of the evening, a video art installation on hunger by Michael Nye played throughout the evening.
